1. Formation and Development History

The Faculty of Analytical Chemistry and Drug Quality Control originated from the Department of Analytical Chemistry and Toxicology under Decision No. 485/QĐ-DHN dated June 23, 2022, issued by the Hanoi University of Pharmacy. Prior to the August Revolution, the department belonged to the Chemistry division of the Hanoi University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Courses in Analytical Chemistry, Toxicology, and Hydrology (Hydrochemistry) were included in the 5-year full-time pharmacy training program. During the period 1945–1954, the institution was evacuated to war zones and continued teaching in the northern resistance areas.

In 1954, the School returned to Hanoi, and the subject of analytical chemistry was incorporated into the training programs for full-time Medicine and Pharmacy students, non-formal education systems, military pharmacy trainees, and Laotian students. In 1961, the Hanoi University of Pharmacy was separated from the Hanoi University of Medicine and Pharmacy, with the separation process completed in 1964. During this period, the department was part of the Department of Inorganic–Analytical Chemistry. In 1964, the department was evacuated to Bien Dong, Luc Ngan (Bac Giang). Despite many hardships, it continued teaching and expanded its activities to meet personnel demands in the North as well as on war fronts B and C.

In 1966, the Analytical Chemistry section gradually separated from the Department of Inorganic–Analytical Chemistry. By 1968, the Analytical Chemistry Department was formally established. In the following years, the department was strengthened by the addition of many lecturers who had graduated from the former Soviet Union and other socialist countries, as well as from domestic universities of pharmacy and comprehensive universities.

Throughout the period 1964–1973, lecturers and technicians overcame numerous difficulties to fulfil their duties at various dispersed evacuation sites. In 1973, the department and the School returned to Hanoi. Many staff members were subsequently sent abroad for further training, while some units were transferred to the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City. A central research unit was established during this period through the reorganization of the department.

Under Resolution No. 01/NQ-HĐTDHN dated March 12, 2020, of the Council of the Hanoi University of Pharmacy approving the University’s Strategy and Development Plan to 2030, with a vision to 2045, and Resolution No. 02/NQ-HĐTDHN dated April 28, 2020, issuing the Regulation on Organisation and Operation of the Hanoi University of Pharmacy (amended and supplemented), the Rector of the Hanoi University of Pharmacy signed Decision No. 485/DHN-QĐ on June 23, 2022, establishing the Faculty of Analytical Chemistry and Drug Quality Control on the basis of the former Department of Analytical Chemistry and Toxicology.

At present, the faculty has 12 lecturers, including 1 Associate Professor with PhD (National Meritorious Teacher), 2 Associate Professors with PhDs, 5 PhD holders, 4 Masters, and 6 technicians, ensuring the fulfilment of all assigned duties. The teaching staff are systematically trained; many lecturers have received overseas training and increasingly gain access to advanced scientific and technological developments.

2. Some Outstanding Achievements

  • In training:

The generations of lecturers of the Faculty of Analytical Chemistry and Drug Quality Control have contributed to the training of tens of thousands of pharmacists, as well as college- and secondary-level pharmacy students. The faculty has directly supervised, and collaborated with external institutions to guide, hundreds of pharmacist graduation theses, more than 150 Master’s theses, and 16 Doctoral dissertations in the field of Drug Quality Control and Toxicology; currently, eight doctoral candidates are in training.

The faculty has compiled and published 15 textbooks in analytical chemistry, toxicology, cosmetics, and environmental sciences. In addition, several lecturers are authors of monographs and reference books, including volumes published by reputable international publishers such as Elsevier.

  • In science and technology

Faculty lecturers have led and participated in three State-level and sub-State-level projects, led four Nafosted projects, six Ministerial-level or equivalent projects, and 18 University-level projects, all of which were approved and completed on schedule. In addition, the faculty has published approximately 200 papers in domestic specialised journals and 29 papers in high–impact factor international ISI journals.

Their publications span a wide range of fields, from theoretical and methodological studies—including analytical techniques and statistical algorithms—to applied experimental research. These achievements have enabled the faculty to consistently meet and surpass annual scientific research targets, serving as a source of pride for all its members.

  • In community service:

The lecturers of the faculty have leveraged their professional expertise in a wide range of community-engagement activities, including participation in and evaluation of drug registration dossiers for the Quality Assurance Sub-committee and the Pharmacopeia Council. They also serve on the Professor Title Council, thesis evaluation committees, project assessment boards for scientific research at all levels, and various scientific and technological conferences.
